Sika Deutschland GmbH (Stuttgart, Germany) has introduced a new fire-retardant epoxy resin system, Biresin CR134FR. Tested at an independent laboratory against UL94, Biresin CR134FR has been given a V-0 rating. The new resin system is said to be particularly suitable for hand laminating carbon fiber applications, but could be used in other applications as well. Compared to many fire resistant epoxy resins, the new Sika system is said to be almost transparent, making the fiber structure of carbon fiber visible. Biresin CR134FR, which has a Tg of ~130°C/266°F, does not contain any halogenated compounds that can emit harmful gasses burned.
