The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME, Dearborn, Mich.) has released the second edition of Fundamentals of Composites Manufacturing: Materials, Methods, and Applications. First published in 1989, the new edition has been revised and expanded to include recent advances, case studies and examples designed to broaden knowledge of composites materials and manufacturing methods. Several major chapters describe the basic materials used to create composite structures, covering matrix properties, polyesters, epoxies, specialty and high-performance resins, thermoplastics, ceramic and metal matrix composites, reinforcements, reinforcement forms, testing and properties, design, sandwich structures and joints and finishing. Major topics also include composites manufacturing methods — compression molding, resin infusion, filament winding, fiber placement, pultrusion, and thermoplastic molding — damage prevention and repair. Authored by A. Brent Strong, the 640-page book is fully illustrated and priced at $90 (USD).
