NetComposites (Chesterfield, U.K.) and the Building Research Establishment (BRE, Watford, Hertfordshire, U.K.) recently co-produced the Green Guide to Composites, an environmental profiling and ranking system for comparing the environmental, economic and social impacts of composite materials and production processes. The Guide covers issues such as health and safety, emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), energy consumption and toxicity of manufacturing processes. It is available as an interactive web-based tool and a printed publication. It was the outcome of the COMPASS project, carried out through the Sustainable Technologies Initiative and undertaken to develop a simplified guide to "green" material selection and related decision making.
