SGL Group (Wiesbaden, Germany) premiered at JEC Europe 2014 its newest carbon fiber, Sigrafil C30 T050 TPI. Sized specifically for use as continuous reinforcement in thermoplastics, the 50K tow is specially designed for high interface performance, particularly with polyamide (PA), in PA 6, PA 11 and PA 12 matrices. The tow reportedly has good spreading behavior for textile processes and can be used in several thermoplastic production process chains. Key benefits include high tensile strength and mechanical performance in thermoplastic matrices. SGL says that this specially sized fiber, tested in a PA 6 matrix, yielded a bending strength almost twice that possible with standard sizing — 113 MPa vs. 55 MPa. Reportedly, the product also delivers low levels of twist/false twist, and the potential for low areal weight. Fiber forms include undirectional tapes and organic sheets, long fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (LFTs), and hybrid yarns.
