FARO Technologies Inc. (Lake Mary, Fla.) has launched a new family of 3-D laser scanners called Photon 80 and Photon 20. The Photon laser scanner is a portable, computerized measurement device that scans, digitally recreates and records all of an object’s or area’s dimensions, creating what looks like a 3-D photograph. The captured data can be used to create a digital model for reverse engineering, quality assurance, inspection, CAD-to-part comparison, factory planning and investigation as well as automatic object recognition in modeling. Compared to the company’s previous scanners, these devices reduce noise by 300 percent for greater clarity; feature 200 percent better positional accuracy; and have greater sensitivity for better detection of distant, dark or more oblique objects. Other features include a high-quality color overlay; increased mirror rotation speed; and faster minimal scanning times. When powered by a Power Base battery, the Photon offers more than six hours of performance.
