Zodiac Aerospace (Plaisir, France), a leader in aircraft seating, reported on April 7 that it has teamed with carbon fiber and prepreg manufacturer Hexcel (Stamford, Conn., USA), to develop L3 - Living Space, Lightweight, Leadtime, a new line of seating systems for commercial aircraft interiors.

The L3 is a passenger seat designed for medium/short-haul flights, offering a good living space to passengers and to airlines a higher density and a lighter weight — less than 4 kg/8.8 lb per passenger. The manufacturing process of the seat, resulting from cooperation between Zodiac Seats and Hexcel, will ensure a quick production and delivery time compared to current seats.

The L3 is an all-composite seat, manufactured from Hexcel’s HexPly carbon fiber prepregs, which provide light weight, mechanical resistance and an aesthetic appearance. The armrests and tray tables are manufactured from Hexcel’s HexMC material.

Zodiac says the certification process for the seats is progressing as per plan.
