WESCO to distribute Duratel composite utility poles

WESCO International will distribute Duratel's long-life, light-weight composite utility poles in the United States.

Duratel (Chicago, Ill., USA), a manufacturer of composite utility pole products for utility transmission and distribution, reported that on June 23 that it has partnered with WESCO International, a provider of electrical, industrial, and communications MRO and OEM products, construction materials, and advanced supply chain management and logistics services. Under the partnership, WESCO International is the exclusive distributor of Duratel composite poles in the United States.

"Duratel offers a broad range of composite products for the utility, lighting and wireless telecommunication industries and specializes in distribution and transmission poles, H-Frame structures and crossarms. No one understands the utility industry and its needs better than WESCO and its employees and we believe this supply chain partnership will bring real value and quality to our respective customers."

Composite poles can be installed with less equipment and manpower than other products and have proven to significantly speed up recovery from severe weather and natural disasters. Further, surveys among utility linesmen who have worked with Duratel poles have shown that it takes approximately half the time to install composite poles compared to competing materials. Some utilities change out wood poles every five to 10 years; Duratel composite poles reportedly will last at least 80 years.

Duratel reports that other utilities are using its pole because it is more convenient and cost-effective to transport and install in many locations, including backyards, restricted access areas and remote or difficult terrain sites. Also, coastal utilities, including Caribbean islands, are using Duratel for areas where high salt and water are constant problems for other material.
