CompositesWorld is preseting an Altair-sponsored webinar on May 21 at 2 p.m. ET (US) titled, "Optimizing Structures for Damage Tolerance."

Abstract: Composite materials offer many advantages in terms of weight and stiffness.  They can also offer advantages in damage tolerance but the mechanisms of damage initiation and propagation are less well understood in composites.  Micromechanical analysis provides a method to analyze and understand the mechanical behavior at the fiber- or particulate-matrix level.  A review of micromechanical analysis techniques will be provided and how they can be implemented with structural optimization methods to achieve minimum weight damage tolerant structures.

The presenters will be:

  • Jacob Fish, the Carlton Professor at Columbia University
  • Robert Yancey, vice president, aerospace and composites at Altair
  • Jeffrey Wollschlager, senior technical director, aerospace at Altair
