Vestas (Aarhus, Denmark) has announced its PowerPlus upgrades — comprising three product offerings — which are designed to increase the power output of existing wind turbines by up to 5 percent. The company will officially launch the new products during the AWEA Windpower 2014 trade show (May 5-8, Las Vegas, Nev., USA).

Power Uprate is a turbine control modification which allows Vestas turbines to increase maximum output from 1.8 MW to 2.0 MW (or from 1.65MW to 1.8 MW for the V82) which results in a 1 to 4 percent increase in Annual Energy Production (AEP).

Extended Cut Out allows turbines to capture more wind at higher speeds by extending the maximum wind speed limit from 25 m/s to 30 m/s, resulting in an AEP increase of 0.5 to 2.0 percent.

Aerodynamic Upgrades are vortex generators, small fins that optimize air flow over the blades which increase AEP by up to 0.8 percent.

Vortex generators are offered by most other wind turbine OEMs and wind blade manufacturers (e.g., GE, Siemens and LM Wind Power). They are designed for each specific blade geometry and act to reduce air flow separation, which increases lift, and thus turbine output.
