Two-bladed wind turbine powers Texas desalination plant

New mid-size, lightweight model aimed at cost-effective, commercial power generation.

As reported by North American Windpower, a two-bladed, 500 kW wind turbine is now providing power to the Mitchell County Desalination Plant near Abilene, Texas in the US. The Windflow 45-500 prototype was designed by Windflow Technology (Christchurch, New Zealand) for sites with average wind speeds up to 8.5 m/s. It was built under license by General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies (Richardson, TX, US) and erected in only two days. According to Windflow licensing manager Chris Holsonback, the composite blades are made using glass fiber/epoxy prepreg and the nacelles are also fiberglass, made with chopped strand mat.

The 45-500 is Windflow’s latest model, following its successful 33-500 wind turbine — with 104 installations worldwide — which uses a 33m diameter two-bladed rotor, also rated at 500 kW. Generating enough power for roughly 200 homes, the Windflow 500 turbines were designed to be small enough to reduce planning, logistics, visual impact and cost issues while being large enough to generate commercial amounts of electricity. Their size and lightweight enable affordable transportation and installation using standard equipment, with the two blades and nacelle installed in one lift.

Reportedly, the new 45-500 prototype has generated several hundred kilowatt-hours of electrical energy and is ready for continuous service in Mitchell County. For more information, visit Windflow Technology’s YouTube Channel or www.windflow.co.nz .
