Golf shaft manufacturer True Temper (Memphis, Tenn.) has released a new version of its Project X shaft series, the PXv 39 (v for velocity). The shaft is fabricated from trademarked TeXtreme Spread Tow carbon fabrics, supplied by Oxeon AB (Boras, Sweden). The PXv weighs only 39g/1.38 oz and is reportedly the lightest shaft yet introduced to the golf market.

“We have combined ultra-high modulus torsional plies with TeXtreme to provide a stable core from which to build the PXv 39. This ultralight, ultrastable core has enabled us to create a sub-40-gram golf shaft that is not only durable but provides the penetrating ball flight that golfers have come to expect from the Project X franchise,” says Don Brown, Project X product development manager and designer.

TeXtreme Spread Tow carbon reinforcements are a unique kind of composite reinforcement suitable when looking to reduce weight and improve mechanical properties. TeXtreme is successfully used in Formula 1, Americas Cup and Advanced Aerospace applications as well as other sporting good applications such as bicycles, skis and ice hockey sticks.

“TeXtreme is becoming the new standard carbon reinforcement for high-end applications where low weight and performance is key. The unique benefits TeXtreme renders is repeatedly proven by the results and constant victories by our customers. We also take big pride in providing an optimized reinforcement solution for each specific application need and also we make sure the solution is realized into full scale production,” says Henrik Blycker, CEO of Oxeon.

The use of TeXtreme is credited with elimination of weight compared to the original design while maintaining the low torque and low spins properties that, according to True Temper, "established Project X as the standard for all high-performance composite shafts."

A leading manufacturer of golf shafts, True Temper Sports imarkets a complete line of shafts under the True Temper, Grafalloy and Project X shaft brands, and sells these brands in more than 30 countries throughout the world.
