Composite structures manufacturer TPI Composites Inc. (Scottsdale, Ariz.) says it's partnering with Volvo Trucks North America (Greensboro, N.C.) to create all-composite, lightweight truck cabs for the U.S. Army and, eventually, the commercial trucking market, using Volvo's sleeper-cab design. The companies also will collaborate with the Center for Composite Materials at the University of Delaware.

The cabs initially will be produced for the Army's wheeled vehicle fleet and later will be adapted for use as commercial sleeper cabs for interstate trucking. The Army version, says TPI, "will address serious military vehicle issues by being lighter in weight, highly durable, and strong enough to carry the heaviest of armor." The first cab prototype is slated for completion within 19 months and will be road tested by Army personnel, TPI says. Additional prototypes could be completed by early 2010.
