Ticona starts long-fiber reinforced thermoplastic manufacturing in China

Ticona has started its LFRT unit in Nanjing, China. It's the first of seven operating units coming online by mid-2009.

Ticona (Florence, Ky.), the engineering polymers business of Celanese Corp., announced the successful start up in March of the trademarked Celstran long-fiber reinforced thermoplastic (LFRT) manufacturing unit, which is part of the Celanese complex in Nanjing, China. Seven operating units are projected to be online by mid-2009.

"Product sampling started at the beginning of 2008 and Ticona shipped its first product to customers in March,"says Wilfried Jobst, commercial director Asia for Ticona, during an interview at Chinaplas 2008. "Completion of the Celstran LFRT unit is a milestone for the Nanjing complex because it gives Ticona its first wholly owned manufacturing facility in Asia.”

Celstran LFRT is a Ticona engineering thermoplastic produced by pultrusion technology in which the long fibers are fully impregnated to deliver optimal reinforcement to the plastic matrix that can be formulated with different polymer feedstocks, from polypropylene and nylon to polyurethane. The combination of mechanical properties, impact and creep resistance, and low warpage imparted by these LFRT products makes them ideal candidates for automotive or other applications that require large, strong, light weight components or assemblies.

As in the company’s Kelsterbach, Germany and Winona Celstran LFRT production sites, the new plant uses the same patented principle methodology for long fiber reinforced polymer production, process layout and equipment and finished product specifications.

The Celstran LFRT facility is part of a multi-year investment by Ticona in China and throughout Asia. This will provide technical and commercial resources and facilities focused on customer application development, along with regional world-scale monomer, polymer and compounding production facilities. In addition to the Celstran LFRT facility, Ticona is establishing other manufacturing units in China that will produce advanced engineered polymers and compounds for customers throughout Asia.
