Sikes Composites recognized as outstanding supplier

Sikes Composites is one of four Outstanding Suppliers to Altec Industries.

Sikes Composites Corp. (Wetumpka, Ala.), a manufacturer of fiberglass composite components for a broad range of industries, has been named a Outstanding Supplier by one of its top customers. Mike Gayford of Sikes Composites received the award on behalf of the firm from Altec Industries (Birmingham, Ala.) at a special event in St. Joseph, Mo. Sikes Composites is among only four firms from among Altec’s 350-company supplier base to receive the award.

Sikes Composites employs 18 people and changed ownership last year. New owners Curtis Howard and Gayford have launched the company down a program of continuous improvement. “We operated our business in North Carolina on a premise of continuous improvement and we are bringing that same philosophy to Sikes Composites,” Howard said. “We have sent some of our employees to Lean Manufacturing training at Auburn University’s Auburn Technical Assistance Center, and this training is providing the foundation of our continuous improvement program.”

Over the past year Sikes Composites has improved efficiency and on-time product delivery to 93 percent. “That, along with standardizing our work procedures and processes, has tremendously improved our product quality,” Howard said. “This is enabling our business to be more competitive in the marketplace." Sikes Composites supplies aerial lift platforms and a variety of other fiberglass components to Altec Industries.
