SGL Group – The Carbon Company (Wiesbaden, Germany) announced on Nov. 30 its 50k heavy-tow carbon fiber has been approved by Germanischer Lloyd Wind Energy GmbH (GL Wind) for the wind industry. SGL Group industrial grade carbon fiber SIGRAFIL C30T050 EPY is the first and only heavy tow carbon fiber formally approved by GL Wind for use in the wind industry.

SGL Group demonstrated that the material characteristics and fatigue behavior of laminates using SIGRAFIL C30T050 EPY fiber are comparable to those of 24k aerospace grade fiber.

SGL says the fatigue properties significantly exceed the minimum values given by the “Guideline for the certification of wind turbines” of GL Wind. The Guideline excludes heavy-tow carbon fiber (>48k) for the design of wind turbine blades, unless additional verification tests are performed. In doing so, SGL Group successfully demonstrated the characteristics of its SIGRAFIL C30T050 EPY fiber and convinced the experts of GL Wind.

SIGRAFIL C30T050 EPY is a 50k, PAN-based carbon fiber designed for industrial applications and is already used in the wind industry in large volumes.
