San Diego Composites builds units for blunt impact testing

The company will deliver two additional stiffened composite fuselage test panels to Sandia National Labs and the U.S. FAA for their research on wide-area blunt impact of composite aircraft.

San Diego Composites Inc. (SDC, San Diego, Calif., USA) reported on Dec. 5 that it will deliver two additional stiffened fuselage test panels to Sandia National Labs (Albuquerque, N.M., USA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for their research on wide-area blunt impact of composite aircraft.

SDC has been supporting the University of California San Diego, aerospace firm Bishop GmbH (Hamburg, Germany), and Sandia National Labs in this multi-year effort funded by the FAA and EASA. Team members also include Boeing and Airbus. SDC also worked with Luna Innovations (Roanoke, Va., USA) to integrate an active sensor, co-cured fiber optic network, which will provide full distributed strain measurements and extensive data on impact damage.
