Berry Plastics Corp. (Franklin, Mass.), well known for its manufacture of molded, unfilled thermoplastic parts and products, has introduced the X-FLEX blast protection system, a composite peel-and-stick armor solution designed to absorb blast energy and mitigate damage from projectile debris associated with explosive devices. The fiber-reinforced polymer is engineered for adhesion to concrete masonry units (CMUs), brick and other surfaces, and it performs across a range of temperatures and environmental conditions. The adhesive system allows the material to be applied to the primed interior side of an exterior wall simply by removing the protective film liner and rolling the material onto the wall with firm pressure. Developed through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Engineered Protective Systems div. of Berry Plastics, this system uses elastomeric material to retrofit walls and enhance the ability to mitigate secondary debris hazards associated with blast loads.
