As September drew to a close, the defending champion, ORACLE TEAM USA, pulled off a miraculous turnabout to win the 34th Americas Cup sailing trophy, with a final score of 9 to 8 in points, coming back from a 1 to 8 deficit.
ORACLE TEAM USA founder Larry Ellison said: “This was the most magnificent spectacle on the water. These 40-plus knot catamarans are amazing. By going to catamarans we tried to make sailing a bit more extreme, friendlier for the viewing audience. A lot of people weren’t interested in sailing, and now they are.”
The AC72 catamarans used in the 34th Americas Cup races can reach speeds of about 46 knots, which equals 75 kmh/46 mph. The weight of an AC72 wing is the same as a small car, but it is 26 times the height, with its 40m/131 ft tall aerofoil. Oxeon AB (Borås, Sweden) is a Preferred Supplier to the Team and helped enable weight savings and performmance improvements in the team's racing yacht by providing spread-tow carbon fiber reinforcements for selected composite parts.
Oxeon, a market leader in Spread Tow reinforcements sold under the tradname name TeXtreme, says it focuses on helping companies to achieve performance benefits and weight savings through the use of their TeXtreme carbon fiber reinforcement solutions.
“We are extremely happy to see ORACLE TEAM USA winning this prestigious title and are glad for whatever part TeXtreme has had in this success. Alongside victories in Formula 1, Tour de France and Stanley Cup," said Andreas Martsman, VP – marketing and sales at Oxeon, "we are very proud to add Americas Cup to that list of achievements made by TeXtreme users.”
Besides ORACLE TEAM USA, TeXtreme is used in the marine industry by selected companies that are benefitting from the increased performance, weight reductions and superior surface smoothness of Oxeon's stread tow. Other customers can be found in Formula 1, bicycles, ice hockey, NASCAR auto racing, advanced aerospace applications, and a variety of industrial applications.
When ORACLE TEAM USA won the 33rd America’s Cup in February 2010, not only did team owner Larry Ellison succeed in his goal of bringing the America’s Cup “home” to the United States, but also his team became the Defender of the 34th America’s Cup. Led by CEO Russell Coutts and skipper Jimmy Spithill, ORACLE TEAM USA enlisted some of the best international sailing, design, build and support talent to defend the trophy on San Francisco Bay in September 2013.
TeXtreme Technology is flexible and tow-size independent which enables development of optimized reinforcement solutions tailor-made for specific application needs. Use of TeXtreme Spread Tow carbon fabrics and carbon unidirectional tapes by manufacturers of advanced aerospace, industrial and sports products confirms that 20 to 30 percent lighter composite parts can be produced with improved mechanical properties and superior surface smoothness. TeXtreme is a registered trademark owned by Oxeon AB. Founded in 2003, Oxeon has since established itself as a market leader in spread-tow reinforcements.
