New Wind Solutions to build carbon fiber blades in Washington

The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash., reports that the company will make 70-ft S-shaped blades in a stacked configuration, and also will manufacture towers with filament-wound carbon fiber.

The News Tribune (Tacoma, Wash., USA) reported on Aug. 6 that startup company New Wind Solutions plans to make carbon fiber wind blades at the Port of Walla Walla, Wash.

The plant should be operational on Oct. 1 or before, company founder Mark Kean told the newspaper. The company also is negotiating with the port to rebuild and use a building at the Port of Walla Walla's Burbank industrial facility. The Burbank facility will make filament-wound carbon fiber towers. The company plans eventually to consolidate operations in Burbank at some point and barge turbines on the Columbia River to be sent abroad to foreign buyers. The project is estimated to cost $31 million.

According to the report, the original design was developed by Vancouver, Wash.-based Windwise Turbine. The turbine uses 70-ft/21.3m elongated S-shaped blades stacked side by side; the generator also is placed at the bottom of the tower.

Kean told the newspaper that he wants to bring an international manufacturer to make carbon fiber in Burbank because of potential risk of a carbon fiber shortage.
