LCOA Composites (Lake Forest, Calif.) has announced expansion of its product offering with a new ballistic hybrid NIJ Level IIIA used for ballistic shields, body armor, automotive armor and any application where lightweight Level IIIA protection is required. The solution weighs less than 1 lb/ft² and is priced less than a standard woven Kevlar solution weighting 1.5 lb/ft²

“This product offers a niche solution by being more cost competitive than other composite products in the lightweight armor category. The hybrid product supports LCOA Composites’ long-term vision and commitment to bringing innovative products to our customers”, says Robert Doherty, President of LCOA Composites. The hybrid solution is priced at approximately 20 percent less than an UHMWP and 5 percent less than a woven Kevlar product.

This news comes shortly after LCOA Composites invested in a new 30-ft by 30-ft, high pressure, multi-opening lab press for increased R&D capabilities, and a cooling tower for its three large-format, high-capacity presses in its 60,000 ft²/5,574m² Lake Forest manufacturing facility. LCOA Composites employs more than 75 people in Lake Forest and is planning to increase that number significantly to meet the needs of their growing armor business.
