EVCO Plastics offers 3D printing with continuous fibers

EVCO has purchased a Mark One 3D continuous fiber printer from MarkForged and makes it available to its customers for design and prototyping as well as parts.

EVCO Plastics (Deforest, Wis.), a custom plastics manufacturer, has invested in delivering its customers unparalleled competitive advantage by expanding its 3D printing capabilities to include the Mark One (manufactured by MarkForged, Cambridge, Mass.), the world’s first 3D printer that can print continuous carbon fiber.

This new technology from MarkForged will greatly shorten design cycles and offer viable parts immediately after printing due to the strong nature of the composite part. This advanced technology uses a new 3D printing process referred to as CFF (Composite Filament Fabrication) in combination with traditional FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication). The technique produces fiber-reinforced composite parts, which are up to 20 times stiffer and 5 times stronger than parts printed using neat plastic. Designers can choose among Kevlar, carbon fiber and fiberglass to reinforce a specially-formulated nylon, which makes the parts stiff and strong.

“Investing in this technology will improve automation and fixturing, and it will drastically reduce the time to create complex parts and pieces,” says Mark McDonald, design manager at EVCO Plastics. “These parts can be measured and tested immediately after printing, making them a vital element to the design process and bringing results to our clients much faster.”

The Mark One was introduced in early 2014 for pre-order, and EVCO received its printer in early November. The printer was put into production right away, focusing on clients in industries such as agriculture, appliances and recreation.
