Cytec to supply composite materials for Bombardier jet programs

Cytec Industries (Woodland Park, N.J.) announced on Feb. 2 that its Engineered Materials division has been awarded contracts to supply carbon fiber composite materials for major primary structures on Bombardier’s (Montréal, Québec, Canada) new CSeries and Learjet 85 aircraft programs. Additionally, CYCOM 890, a liquid resin infusion system, will be used to manufacture structural elements of Bombardier’s CSeries aircraft wing. The resin system’s performance characteristics reportedly widen the resin infusion processing window and, thus, reduce risk during fabrication of large and complex structures. The resin is produced at Cytec Engineered Materials’ (Tempe, Ariz.) plant in Wrexham, U.K.

Construction got under way in November 2009 on Bombardier’s new CSeries composite wing manufacturing and assembly facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Bombardier Belfast successfully assembled a pre-production demonstrator wing, using its proprietary Resin Transfer Infusion process, and will begin testing it early this year.

Since the CSeries launch in July 2008, Bombardier has recorded firm orders for 50 CS100 and CS300 aircraft from Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Lease Corporation International Group. Optimized for the longer range, single-aisle, 100- to 145-seat commercial market, the planes reportedly will deliver the lowest operating costs in their class.

Bombardier has selected additional materials from Cytec’s portfolio for the midsized, business-class Learjet 85’s primary and secondary structures. The plane is the first in the Learjet line to feature an all-composite airframe.

Cytec also was awarded a contract to supply a range of advanced composite materials for current Bombardier programs. Cytec expects the awards to generate revenues as high as $800 million  (USD) over the coming decade.
