Cyclone to build F-18 fuel tanks

Elbit Systems subsidiary Cyclone Aviation Products has won a contract to supply filament-wound fuel tanks for U.S. Navy F-18 jet fighters.

Elbit Systems Ltd. (Haifa, Israel) on Dec. 2 announced that its subsidiary, Cyclone Aviation Products Ltd. has been awarded a contract to supply the U.S. Navy with filament-wound, 330-gal fuel tanks F-18 jet fighters.

The first phase of the contract amounts to $2.4 million; total value is estimated at $60 million. Deliveries are scheduled to take place between 2009 and 2013. The 330-gal fuel tanks are manufactured via composite filament winding and will be designed to sustain damage that may occur during aircraft carrier fires.

Cyclone’s core business is the development and manufacture of metal and composite structural assemblies for aircraft, helicopters and UAVs.
