DSM launches new resin system for SMC/BMC auto apps

By Staff | March 24, 2008

DSM Composite Resins (Schaffhausen, Switzerland) announced on March 20 a new resin system, called Palapreg Premium, for the Class A exterior SMC-BMC applications in the automotive industry. In response to the automotive industry’s strict demands for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC), and to support DSM’s sustainability program to take responsibility for reducing the environmental impact of it’s products, DSM has developed Palapreg Premium. This new development heralds a breakthrough reduction of VOC emissions, bringing total emissions of the SMC application down to around 100ppm, according VDA 278 – setting a new industry standard.

On top of the environmental advantages, the new Palapreg Premium resin also offers a complete system solution for the industry, which translates to faster dosing and shorter cycle times. The entire handling and fulfillment process for the customer is simplified and streamlined. This results in a strong balance of the resin system with greatly improved quality for the application in SMC-BMC exterior panels. In addition Palapreg Premium gives significantly improved surface quality and is fully online paintable, making it ideal for large exterior body panels.

The DSM Competence Center for SMC/BMC, based in Ludwigshafen in the heart of the German automotive industry, spearheaded together with its partners the emission reduction development program using the latest technology in resins, additives and initiator. Palapreg Premium is now commercially available for all Class A SMCs including low density SMC recipes.
