General Motors (GM, Detroit, Mich.) has selected BMC 304 polyester-based bulk molding compound (BMC), supplied by Bulk Molding Compounds Inc. (W. Chicago, Ill.) for the spare tire heat shields on its next-generation compact utility vehicles (CUVs) – the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Equinox and Saturn Outlook. To maximize interior room, spare tires are stored beneath the vehicle in close proximity to the exhaust system – an environment for which the BMC’s high operating temperature is reportedly well-suited. The shields are fabricated by MacLean Vehicle Systems (Mundelein, Ill.).
