In the June 2012 issue of CT, our “Composites: Past, Present & Future” article on the history of sheet molding compound (SMC) in auto manufacturing, written by James B. Canner, made reference to a Dr. Appel who worked with the Budd Co. (Troy, Mich.) circa. 1972. An alert reader, who once worked with the gentleman in question, suggested that his name might instead be Dr. Epel. The CT staff looked into it and found that, indeed, Dr. Joseph N. Epel was director of The Plastics Research and Development Center at the Budd Co. CT regrets the error. Epel was a significant force in the development of SMC and other composites technologies and was issued 10 patents during his tenure there.
