Composites One demonstrated fully operational closed mold shop at IBEX

Distributor Composites One demonstrated on large scale the benefits of closed molding at IBEX and ACMA.

Composites One's (Arlington Heights, Ill.) live demonstrations and Closed Mold University Technical Seminars provided IBEX and ACMA attendees with resources and information about the benefits of closed mold processes. Visitors at the 2007 IBEX Show in Miami, Florida saw a fully operating closed mold shop resulting in the production of 2-foot catamarans using Light Resin Transfer Molding (LRTM). Hatch covers were also produced using Closed Cavity Bag Molding (CCBM), and a 15-foot skiff hull was Vacuum Infused (VIP) daily.

In addition, technical presentations were made at both IBEX and Composites & Polycon 2007 in Tampa, Florida. These included Closed Mold Shop Set Up, LRTM Troubleshooting, Advanced VIP Techniques and CCBM Techniques. Composites One's team of technical experts included Doug Smith of RTM North and John Alanko of Arctek, as well as the Composites One Closed Mold Team, including Regional Technical Support Managers.

"We want to continue to show composites manufacturers the benefits and value of closed mold processes,"said Composites One President and Chief Operating Officer Leon Garoufalis. "Additionally, we want to demonstrate our ability to educate and assist those interested in converting to closed mold processes.”

Composites One provided a unique learning opportunity for attendees at both IBEX and Composites & Polycon 2007. In addition to viewing live demonstrations, they were able to hear industry experts answer questions, explain the process and discuss closed mold equipment and materials. They were also able to see the finished parts up close.

"It’s not everyday someone decides to set up a production shop in a parking lot in Miami, Florida – we succeeded. I think we got some wheels turning and hopefully inspired a few more believers. If we can set up a production shop in a parking lot, then just think what we can accomplish when we visit a customer's production facility"said Greg Shymske, Vice President of Marketing at Composites One.

The Composites One demonstrations were a joint effort between Composites One, major suppliers, industry experts and organizations, including: 3M, Airtech, Alcan Composites, Arctek Inc., Arkema, Cook Composites & Polymers, Chemtrend, Chomarat, Dynabrade, Glascraft, ITW Plexus, Owens Corning, Progress, RTM North, and Vectorply. Composites Manufacturing was the official media sponsor of the event.

"Without the support of our supplier partners, live demonstrations of this magnitude would have been very difficult to accomplish,"added Garoufalis.
