The Item (Sumter, S.C., USA) newspaper and website reported on June 11 that a carbon fiber manufacturing firm is apparently considering locating a manufacturing plant in the Sumter area.

The report says the name of the company has not been released, but Jay Schwedler, the president of the Sumter Economic Development Board, said the board has been working to try to bring this company to Sumter for more than a year. "It's not a done deal yet," Schwedler said. "There are many, many things that have to come into place."

The report says the Sumter County Council approved a resolution authorizing an incentive agreement with the company. A county official said during discussion after the meeting that the company manufactures carbon fiber.

County Council vice chairman Eugene Baten said the incentives aim to give the company another reason to come to Sumter, without giving away too much. "We try to make sure we're in a win-win situation" for Sumter and the company, Baten said. Schwedler said he could not release information about the kind of jobs that could be available or when the company might release its name.
