Airborne (The Hague, the Netherlands) and Siemens (Munich, Germany) has built a 'digital factory' for composites in the Netherlands in Ypenburg. Deputy Mayor Ingrid van Engelshoven from The Hague opened the Airborne Siemens Digital Factory Field Lab on Dec. 1, 2015. It will feature design, simulation, production planning, production, feedback, testing, but also aspects such as supply chain management, in one environment.
“There is a will in The Hague to harness and maximize the power of knowledge and new technologies in the years ahead. The establishment of the Airborne Siemens Digital Factory Fieldlab makes an enormous contribution to this aim,” said Ingrid van Engelshoven, deputy Mayor from The Hague. “While manual manufacturing is still the global standard for the composites sector, Airborne and Siemens are working on automating and digitalizing the production process here in The Hague. Not only does that present fantastic opportunities to do research into new applications for composites and manufacture them at a lower price, but also to stimulate job opportunities by reclaiming the manufacturing industry for the Netherlands.”
The FieldLab at the Airborne site has three components: a business case for composite manufacturing, a knowledge hub and an experience center, where training sessions, workshops, plenary meetings and demonstrations are held.
“We are going to have to digitalize our manufacturing industry and automate it to remain competitive,” said Ab van der Touw, chairman of the Siemens Nederland managing board. “That is why we need a paradigm shift from ‘automation sheds jobs,’ to ‘automation creates jobs.’ So we’d better be smart.”
