He’s been portrayed as an intimidating, car crushing creature that wreaks havoc on NASCAR racing’s most skilled competitors. He’s been molded into the winner’s trophy, playfully mimicked by victorious drivers, featured in a comic book and merchandised as an action figure. In 2008, Miles the Monster will become the largest attraction at the Dover International Speedway NASCAR track in Dover, Del. and will be one of the tallest fiberglass structures in the world. Contractor ACI Composites Inc. will develop and construct the 46-ft/14m tall fiberglass Monster Monument at its facility in Lancaster, Pa. Fiberglass components will pre-molded, then be placed over a welded steel superstructure at the Dover site. Construction will be finished prior to the May 30-June 1, 2008 race weekend. The structure depicts the Monster bursting out of the concrete ground, with glowing red eyes and a menacing grin, carrying with him a full-scale stock car in his right hand. Dover Speedway officials expect that the new attraction will be a “must see” for race fans visiting the racetrack, also known as the Monster Mile.
