2011 Carbon Fiber conference taking shape

Agenda and speakers are being lined up for CompositesWorld's 2011 Carbon Fiber conference, to be held Dec. 5-7 at the Washington Marriott Hotel in Washington, D.C.

CompositesWorld, publisher of High-Performance Composites and Composites Technology magazines, has announced that the 2011 Carbon Fiber conference agenda is beginning to come together for the event that will be held Dec. 5-7, at the Washington Marriott Hotel on 22nd Street (Washington, D.C.).

The co-chairs for this year’s conference are Steven Carmichael, director of sales, Grafil / Mitsubishi Rayon Co., and Tom Haulik, carbon fiber sales manager at Hexcel. This international conference is designed for executives from leading fiber suppliers, end users, fiber converters, prepreggers, and composites parts manufacturers to discuss the current supply and demand situation for carbon fiber as well as the future prospect for growth of new carbon fiber composite applications.

Confirmed speakers to date include the keynote presentation by Bruno Beral, head of structure policy & development, engineering structure at Airbus; Dr. Nirav Patel, senior lead engineer at GE Energy; Slade Gardner, fellow – materials & structures technologies at Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center; Dave Dickson, tooling technical development leader at Boeing Commercial Airplanes; Carmelo Lo Faro, vice president of technology at Cytec Engineered Materials; Sam Sasaki, director of ACM technology at Mitsubishi Rayon Corp.; James Colgrove, senior engineer at Trek Bicycle Cor.; Adam Gans, director of product development for sticks at Bauer; and Kevin Wolf, assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration Bureau of Industry and Security.

More than 140 marketing executives, business development specialists, technical directors and industry analysts attended the 2010 conference in La Jolla, CA, where they explored the regional outlook for traditional markets, such as aerospace, commercial aviation and sporting goods, as well as the growing demand from industrial markets for carbon fiber, such as wind energy, construction, CNG and hydrogen storage tanks, marine and automotive applications.

In addition, there will be two optional preconference seminars on Dec. 5. In the morning workshop, "High-Strength Light-weight Materials: DoE EERE Opportunities in Carbon Fiber," will be led by Ned Stetson, PhD, U.S. Department of Energy, Fuel Cell Technologies Program, Hydrogen Storage Team Lead, with others to be determined from the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy. The afternoon seminar, "2011 Global Market Opportunities for Carbon Fibers: An Industry Evolving into High-Volume Processing," will be presented by Anthony (Tony) Roberts, AJR Consultant LLC, David Service, Bluestar Fibres Co. Ltd., and Chris Red, Composite Market Reports.
