ACMA Proposes FRP Inclusion In IBC

By Staff | April 2008

The American Composites Manufacturers Assn. (ACMA, Arlington, Va.) has announced an effort to introduce fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites into the International Building Code (IBC) to promote acceptance of composites used in building and construction. During the International Code Council (ICC) public hearings in late February, the ICC’s Fire Safety Committee voted to accept ACMA’s proposal as an initial step toward inclusion of language that will introduce FRP composites into the IBC and outline the proper use of FRP in nonstructural applications. After a public comment period of several months, when code officials and ICC members may submit amendments to the draft code changes, the entire code body will vote on whether to approve the language at a public meeting in September. If no comments are received, the language will be automatically adopted in the 2009 edition of the IBC.
